FAMILY LIVING PROGRAM HEALTHY LIVING
The Family Living Program in Snohomish County teaches life skills and addresses issues critical to family health and well being. WSU Extension is part of the Human Services Department of Snohomish County as well as the statewide WSU Family Living Program. Low-income families are the primary local audience. The Healthy Living component addresses preventable health issues such obesity and diabetes and community policy issues such as access to health care. We strive to develop and provide the latest evidence-based community education programs that promote self, family, and community sustainability.
Healthy Communities Project:
WSU Extension’s Food $ense and Healthy Living programs have joined with many community businesses, schools, agencies, and community health centers as partners with Snohomish Health District to promote the Healthy Communities Project throughout Snohomish County. The goal is to actively work with cities within the County to implement a plan of action that promotes healthy families and reduces obesity and its related chronic diseases. Snohomish Health District is currently taking the leadership role in facilitating various planning committees throughout the County. Marysville (www.ci.marysville.wa.us), Lynnwood, and Everett are cities currently participating in the Healthy Communities Projects.
UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?
is a PBS documentary on socioeconomic and racial disparities in health (www.unnaturalcauses.org). WSU Extension is an active partner with numerous community organizations and agencies, along with Communities of Color Coalition (C3) as the lead, in helping to coordinate and facilitate multiple community dialogues throughout Snohomish County. The documentary shows that the latest research is pointing to non-medical issues such as racism as causes of medical problems in some communities. WSU Extension feels that public discussion will help find solutions to these problems. The dialogue sessions typically starts out with a light community supper, followed by a screening of a 30-minute selected segment from Unnatural Causes. This is continued with a facilitated discussion with community members on ways to put small local actions into place to start addressing the equity and disparities in health care.
The purpose of these facilitated community dialogues is:
- To increase public awareness of health disparities
- To promote understanding of how class and race influence health outcomes
- To demonstrate how health disparities are not limited to the poor and people of color, but harm everyone in the community
- To draw the attention of policy makers to community-based initiatives for health equity
- To show the connection between the health of the community and the health of the individual
