Farmers around the world look to their poultry flock as a source of easily raised food, and easily managed income. The cheapest way to raise a chicken is to let it roam, feeding as much as possible on bugs, plants, and seeds. A CHICKEN TILLER affords both protection and confinement while still allowing chickens to 'scratch' for their food. The pen is 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 5 feet high, triangular in shape, with an open rectangular bottom. The pen, designed to fit over a raised garden bed in preparation for planting, has worked well and has proven itself to be inexpensive, portable, and efficient. It can easily house ten chickens.
The chicken tiller has a wooden frame covered with chicken wire on the front half and tin on the other. An old broom handle provides a roost and a built-in nesting box is accessible from the back of the tiller. There is a door on the middle of one side. One can winterize the chicken tillers in the colder months by nailing or stapling aluminum on the North and West sides of the tiller. This protects from freezing rains and wind.
