The Original Fast Food !!!

How many servings of vegetables and fruits should I eat?

Think "5 A DAY" for better health.

Vegetables-- Eat at least three servings per day. At least one of these servings should be dark leafy greens (such as spinach or broccoli) or yellow-orange (such as carrots, sweet potatoes, or squash).

A serving is equal to:

1/2 cup cooked or canned vegetables.

1 cup leafy greens.

6-8 carrot/celery sticks.

(3 inches long).

1 medium potato.

3/4 cup (16 oz.) vegetable juice.

1/2 cup cooked or canned dry beans or peas (try to include these in your diet several times each week.)

Fruits-- Eat at least two servings per day. One of these should be citrus fruit (such as oranges, tangerines, or grapefruit).

A serving is equal to:

1 medium piece of fruit (apple, pear, orange).

1/2 grapefruit, 1/4 cup dried fruit.

3/4 cup (6oz) fruit juice.

1/2 cup cooked or canned fruit, 1/2 cup berries.

FOOD STAMP SAVVY...

Is there anything
food stamps
will not buy???

Food stamps cannot be used to buy alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, household supplies such as soap or paper products, medicine or vitamins and other non-food items. They also cannot be used for hot food that are ready to eat. If you have any questions or desire additional information, please contact the staff at your local Food Stamp Office.

Tips to try!!!

Making a shopping list helps to save time and money and can help you make healthier choices.

How can I make my food stamps or monthly food income last the entire month???

Budget your food income:

$-----> WEEK 1

$---------> WEEK 2

$-------------> WEEK 3

$------------------> WEEK 4

$-----------------------> WEEK 5

  • Use only one envelope per week. Add extra cash if needed.

If a month has only 4 weeks use the fifth envelope for emergencies, birthdays or special treats.

NUTRITION NELLIE

Dear Nellie,

How can I get the best buy when I grocery shop?

Signed,

Dutiful shopper

Dear Dutiful,

Compare prices and buy items which cost less.

Look for store brands.

Only buy what you can use.

Buy fruits and vegetables only in season for best prices.

Check the unit price on items, bigger doesn’t always mean

cheaper.

When using coupons only buy what you like and are likely

to use.

Sincerely,

Nellie
